Packing Essentials for Your Stay in The Pennines

Pennine Manor is not only a great hotel in itself, but it is also fortunate enough to sit amongst the most stunning rural surroundings, and if you stay with us, you’re certainly going to want to take advantage of this fact. But, being properly prepared for this type of a holiday is vital to ensure both safety and comfort, so we’ve compiled some things to consider for your pre-travel checklist.

We’ll start with some key items, appropriate for any trip.

Have you got your purse or wallet? Phone charger? Any medications? ID?

You have? Good. That’s the hard part out of the way. But here are a few things specific to our region that you might not have considered beforehand…

  1. Pack Good Walking Shoes

While there’s plenty to do in the nearby town of Huddersfield, Pennine Manor just so happens to be in the vicinity of a number of wonderful natural areas as well. Perhaps you’d like to take on The National Trust site, Marsden Moor, with its 5000+ acres of moorland, or maybe Beaumont Park, with its cascades, grottos, cliffs and woodland. Either way, you’re going to want to be as comfortable as possible, as it would be such a shame to abandon such stunning walks for the sake of aching feet or shoes you can’t stand to get a little muddy. This is especially important as winter begins to set in, as hardwearing shoes with a deep tread will also help offset natural hazards like ice or snow.

  1. Opt For Layered Clothing

Further to suitable footwear, the rest of your outfit is equally as important. It’s no great secret that Yorkshire’s weather can be more than a little unpredictable at times, and so we advise packing in layers in order to make sure you’re covered for every occasion. A fleece or light jumper can offer that additional warmth beneath your coat on a chilly morning, but can also easily be removed if the sun comes out. It might also be worth bringing along a scarf for protection from the cold winds that can sometimes occur in the highest and most exposed areas, and a rain covering is another absolute must.

  1. Sun Protection and Skincare

Sun cream in winter? Don’t be fooled into thinking the sun can’t be damaging at any time of the year. Some of the coldest days actually come with a lot of sunlight, and just because you can’t feel the warmth doesn’t mean it’s not there. You might not need it on the day, but if you plan on being outdoors for an extended period, having some kind of sun protection or at least a good moisturizer on hand with your medical supplies is never a bad idea.

  1. Don’t Forget Your Camera and Memory Cards

Of course, it’s all well and good wearing the right gear, but you’ll have nothing but your memories to rely on unless you pack your camera. The views from Pennine Manor and its surrounding hiking routes are definitely something you’ll want to capture and take away with you. It might be worth packing an additional memory card or two into your camera bag too, as we can almost guarantee you’re not going to want to stop snapping!

Only have your phone? This can still capture beautiful footage too, and if you invest in some cheap touch screen gloves, even in the cold you’ll be unstoppable.

  1. Remember to Leave Room for All That Shopping

While the great outdoors is our biggest draw, there is unfortunately no escaping the fact that it will likely rain at some point during your stay. Luckily for you, Huddersfield is home to multiple shopping centres where you can shelter from a downpour, so we’re a great base for Christmas shoppers too! This is where bringing additional luggage can come in handy. Cotton tote bags are really easy to fold up small into your suitcase, and you can even buy foldaway rucksacks these days too, meaning you can shop to your heart’s content before retiring to our hotel for a peaceful rest among our tranquil surroundings. And our large car park means you’ll never be stuck for a space right by the front entrance if you want to bring your bags inside.

  1. Keep an Open Mind and Be Ready to Explore

A readiness to explore is probably one of the most important items on this list. If our private helipad and neighbourly horses aren’t enough to pique your interest, our location on the edge of the Peak District and our close proximity to star attractions such as Huddersfield’s Splash Park, a number of activity centres, Kirklees Museum and Ponderosa Zoo, has to help. Pennine Manor is ready to act as your base for all things Yorkshire, whatever the weather, and as long as you can provide yourselves, we’ll provide all the comfort and entertainment you need for an unforgettable staycation.
